Hot! A rather old shot (April 2007) of Roger and Mirka - from Annie Leibovitz’s Federer’s Dubai shoot.
The last of my family cats died today, and I’m 12,000 miles away from home, so it’s hard to take. Izzy was almost 20, but just got too old to carry on. We used to joke at the shape she kept herself in. She really was extraordinary, doing what we called “cat aerobics” religiously in the garden for most of those 20 years.
She had three kittens, all of whom she outlived, and was a beautiful little light in our lives.
My sister called me from London to tell me. She was pretty upset, but I hope hearing my voice made her feel calmer. My Mum, who is currently in the US, will also feel it, since she didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. But we all know little Izz will be happy in the afterlife with her kids and the other cats we’ve had over the years.
We’ll miss you, Izz Whizz. But we’ll see you, and the rest of the litter, on the other side :)
My favorite place to hear music: The Metro
It’s a pretty small place, but it reminds me of the old Marquee in London, which closed many years ago. It’s intimate, has a good sound system, and always draws a fun crowd.
The last time I was there was to see The Ting Tings, and it was absolutely brilliant fun. One day, I’ll play on that stage, I hope. Would be so good to see the venue from that angle.
I never thought I’d see a black president in my lifetime, let alone one with the middle name “Hussein”.
This will live long in my memory.
Behind the scenes at inauguration
This is a totally amazing video from John Legend, taken behind the scenes at Barack Obama’s inauguration concert yesterday.
John features Beyonce and Queen Latifah, among others, as they are starstruck by the US President Elect.
But it’s Obama’s attitude that is so awesome - he’s down to earth and humble, and looks like being one of the great US presidents of my generation.
I hope so, at least.
Mrs Mugabe assaults photographer in Hong Kong
This is sickening, not so much the attack, but the fact that Grace Mugabe can’t see what’s wrong with spending close to $3000 a day while the nation governed by her husband starves and dies.
When Britney was hot
Britney Spears in 2003, taken by celebrity photographer Matthew Rolston. Yeah, I did a double or triple take too.
Farewell messages to President Bush
The Times asked its readers to post farewell messages to President Bush, universally pilloried as the worst president in the relatively short history of United States presidents.
Some of them are surprising, others predictable. One thing is for sure, everybody appears to have an opinion on Dubya.
Mine? Well, I didn’t like the guy, for all the reasons most other people didn’t like him - Iraq, Israel, WMD, etc etc.
But mostly, I didn’t like that he never listened. One of the best ways to learn is to listen, no matter how experienced you might think you are in anything you do. I hope he can learn to do that before he dies.
I’d love to sit down with him for an afternoon, too - maybe in a year or so, and see how he honestly feels about some of the decisions he made. No doubt he had a tough time, not least with 9/11, which was an impossible test for anyone. But really, I’d like to know if he has any regrets, and why he chose not to take the advice of pretty much the whole the world when it was offered. Only he knows why he didn’t.
