My favorite place to hear music: The Metro
It’s a pretty small place, but it reminds me of the old Marquee in London, which closed many years ago. It’s intimate, has a good sound system, and always draws a fun crowd. The last time I was there was to see The Ting Tings, and it was absolutely brilliant fun. One day, I’ll play on that stage, I hope. Would be so good to see the venue from that angle.

I never thought I’d see a black president in my lifetime, let alone one with the middle name “Hussein”. This will live long in my memory.

Behind the scenes at inauguration
This is a totally amazing video from John Legend, taken behind the scenes at Barack Obama’s inauguration concert yesterday. John features Beyonce and Queen Latifah, among others, as they are starstruck by the US President Elect. But it’s Obama’s attitude that is so awesome - he’s down to earth and humble, and looks like being one of the great US presidents of my...

Mrs Mugabe assaults photographer in Hong Kong →
This is sickening, not so much the attack, but the fact that Grace Mugabe can’t see what’s wrong with spending close to $3000 a day while the nation governed by her husband starves and dies.

Farewell messages to President Bush →
The Times asked its readers to post farewell messages to President Bush, universally pilloried as the worst president in the relatively short history of United States presidents. Some of them are surprising, others predictable. One thing is for sure, everybody appears to have an opinion on Dubya. Mine? Well, I didn’t like the guy, for all the reasons most other people didn’t like him...

Temperature
I wish I was at home - that’s London. It’s been snowing, and it’s freezing cold, and I miss that about home. Sydney today is way over 30 degrees centigrade, and it”s muggy as all hell. I hate it when it’s like this. I can’t sleep, I can’t eat, I can’t feel comfortable at all. If I had a bath, I’d fill it with ice, and lie in it all night.

My 2008 highlights
As my friends and I contemplated 2008 on New Year’s Eve, I realised it’s not been the most active of years. It started with a picnic at Kirribilli with Elle, and ended in drunken chaos at our house two days ago - the good kind of chaos, mind you. Anyway, I though I’d write a summary of all the things I loved about 2008, so here goes, in no particular order. Picnics at...

Australia's sporting annus horribilis →
As an Englishman, I have to say watching Australia fail in several sporting contest this year was a delight. I’m looking forward to the Ashes, but until it is won, I’ll say nothing about Australia not being capable. TF

Arrgghhh - my ear
Well the good news is my ear appears to have stopped humming. However, it’s now ringing like a mo-fo. It also feels a little blocked up, and I wasn’t feeling too steady on my feet earlier. Two doctors haven’t been able to diagnose anything peculiar in there, and I still have three weeks to wait until I can get a hearing test done. Watching Band Of Brothers tonight (I’m...

The 20 best music videos of 2008 →
Spin Magazine has put together a myriad of lists this festive season. Arguably one of its better ones is this, the 20 best music videos of 2008. Other lists include the 20 best songs, and the 40 best albums, presmuably because they couldn’t cut that down to 20. Oh, and then there are the 10 best overlooked albums of 2008 - presumably because all the others were overlooked for good reason.

Kick in the guts for IE →
Google is actively turning people away from Internet Explorer by brazenly recommending Firefox and Chrome as the best browsers to choose if you’re a Gmail user. If you log in to Gmail through Internet Explorer, you’ll see a red link next to your account name in the top right, directing you to this page, which effectively says steer clear of IE. I don’t know about you, but...

Ear aid
I went to the doctor this morning to get an opinion on my right ear, which has been driving me crazy over the past few days, humming and ringing and generally not feeling right. After firing the light of a torch down my ear canal, I was heartened to hear I had no infection and no blockages. However, that was the only good news. The doctor was completely baffled by my description of the problem,...

As you’ll get to realise if you continue to come back here, I like taking photographs. For my last birthday, I was lucky enough to be given a photography course at Sydney’s Australian Centre For Photography, which entailed five weeks of learning all the technical shit I felt I needed to get a hold of to really consider myself a photographer of worth. Tonight is the culmination of that...

So this is it ...
It should be noted that I’ve tried to create and maintain a blog many times, but have rarely succeeded past about the year mark. I think the main reason for this is that I’ve never found blogging alone is enough for me to maintain a web presence that is engaging enough to push outwards. This is where I’m hopng Tumblr can help, by allowing me to post all the things I’m...
