Ear aid

I went to the doctor this morning to get an opinion on my right ear, which has been driving me crazy over the past few days, humming and ringing and generally not feeling right. After firing the light of a torch down my ear canal, I was heartened to hear I had no infection and no blockages. However, that was the only good news.

The doctor was completely baffled by my description of the problem, since I have no pain, no dizziness or anything remotely resembling the medical conditions he is clearly more capable of diagnosing. Therefore, he sent me to an audiologist, but not before filling me with a fear of losing my hearing as a result of loud music and drumming.

I’m not actually able to get an appointment to check out my hearing for another month, which is amazing, but apparently owed to the fact that so many people are damaging their hearing by listening to iPods and other MP3 players.

So worst case, I get the hearing assessment back and I’m going deaf. I’ll need a CAT scan to diagnose the full extent of the damage and then treatment, hearing aids, and whatever. Best case, the ringing goes away before I even get so far as the hearing assessment and everything is fine. So far, it’s far less annoying than it was when it first came on, so I’m hopeful of the best case scenario.

I don’t think I’ll think about what happens if I’m going deaf.
